The defence lawyers representing Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic have filed a motion with the U.N. court seeking his urgent release to Serbia on health grounds. Despite being convicted on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, Mladic’s lawyers argue that he can receive specialized treatment in Serbia for his illness.
The 82-year-old general has been known to suffer from cognitive impairments and has been hospitalized at least twice this year. His lawyers claim that being in Serbia would eliminate language barriers, making communication easier for Mladic.
Mladic has been dubbed the “butcher of the Balkans” due to his role in the Bosnian war from 1992-1995. His crimes include terrorizing civilians in Sarajevo during a siege and massacring more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995. The court papers do not disclose details about Mladic’s specific health condition.
It is now up to the judges of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) to decide on the application for Mladic’s release. Until then, he remains detained in The Hague, where he has been residing since his final conviction on appeal in 2021.
