Redeeming the Kings: How Marcus Smart Would Have Evolved the Franchise in the 2014 NBA Draft

The 2014 NBA Draft has proven to be an excellent class over the past decade. NBA MVPs Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic were both drafted in this class, with Jokic slipping to the Denver Nuggets in the second round. On the other hand, the Sacramento Kings selected Nik Stauskas with the No. 8 overall pick, which did not pan out for the team.

The Sacramento Kings have been known for making questionable draft picks in recent years. If they had the chance to go back and redraft in 2014, they would have selected Marcus Smart according to ESPN. Smart, who was originally drafted by the Boston Celtics, has become known for his defensive prowess in the league, winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022 and earning multiple All-Defensive team selections.

Smart is a two-time NBA champion and a four-time All-Star who has established himself as one of the top defenders in basketball today. In contrast, Stauskas only appeared in 21 games for the Kings before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. This move by then-general manager Vlade Divac did not work out well for
