Laura Kelley, originally from Arkansas, moved to Colorado 18 years ago to embrace the adventurous lifestyle of the state. Despite being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2020 and facing mobility challenges, Kelley was determined to continue seeking out extreme experiences. For her, engaging in high-risk activities can be a way to regain a sense of control in her life.

However, Emily Hemendinger, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, warns that constantly seeking greater adrenaline rushes can lead to addictive behavior and dangerous mindsets. Hemendinger emphasizes the importance of being mindful of the impact these activities can have on mental health and well-being.

Kelley believes that life itself is an adventure and encourages others to make the most of their time on Earth. While outdoor activities can be fulfilling and rewarding, it’s essential to approach them with a balanced mindset to avoid falling into a cycle of constantly seeking higher levels of excitement.
