USATF Reverses Decision, Fields U.S. Team for 2024 World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru: Prioritizing Safety and Athletic Success

USATF Chooses to Field U20 World Team After Thoughtful Deliberation

In a recent press release, USATF announced that it has reversed its decision and will field a U.S. team for the 2024 World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. The organization had previously cited safety concerns and competitive readiness as reasons for not sending a team to the event. However, after consulting with World Athletics and the Local Organizing Committee in Lima, USATF received assurance that safety measures would be in place for the championships.

USATF emphasized that the safety and well-being of its athletes, coaches, managers, and staff are top priorities. The organization will continue to closely communicate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful and safe participation in the championships. The full team announcement will be made after the USATF Under-20 Championships on June 12-13, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon. This decision marks a turnaround from USATF’s withdrawal from the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya due to safety concerns and COVID-19 pandemic reasons. Looking ahead, the U.S. will host the 2026 World U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
