Paul Newman stars in a new sports film that offers more depth and substance than many of its counterparts. Unlike other movies that focus solely on the glamour and glory of sports, “Slap Shot” delves into the struggles of a struggling team in a declining city. The Charlestown Chiefs are on the brink of collapse, but their players are anything but perfect. They’re crude, flawed individuals with their own personal issues to deal with. What makes this film stand out is its portrayal of violence on the ice, which leads to both comedic and intense moments throughout the story. While “Slap Shot” may not leave you feeling uplifted, it’s unique blend of humor, sharp dialogue, and occasional brutality make it a standout in the sports movie genre.
