Promoting Global Equity in Genomics Research: A Regional Meeting in Brasilia Brings Together Experts and Researchers

PAHO/WHO to convene regional meeting on human genomics for health

The World Health Organization (WHO) Science Council is promoting equitable access to genomics research and technologies globally. To this end, the Regional Meeting “Human Genomics for Health: Enhancing the Impact of Effective Research” will be held in Brasilia, Brazil on May 15-16, 2024.

The aim of the meeting is to promote the implementation of genomics in clinical medicine and public health, as well as strengthen genomics research in the Americas. Genomics is a rapidly evolving field that focuses on characterizing all the genes of an organism rather than individual genes studied in genetics. It provides insights into areas such as clinical care, food safety, infection control, and is an essential component of the “One Health” approach.

PAHO’s Science and Knowledge for Impact Unit (SK/EIH) is organizing the meeting with support from WHO, the PAHO Brazil Country office, and the Ministry of Health, Brazil. The meeting will bring together representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts and researchers working within the precision medicine ecosystem.

During the event, participants will have opportunities to share experiences and best practices in implementing genomic evidence to improve precision medicine and public health strategies. They will also identify challenges and strategies for genomics implementation and create opportunities for collaborations. The meeting will have simultaneous interpretation in English, Spanish
