Devon SportsLab Takes STEM to the Grass: OKSU Athletes Educate Students on the Science Behind Sports

Local students discover the science behind popular sports

Kingfisher Upper Elementary School recently had a special visit from Oklahoma State University soccer and football players, who came to educate students on the science behind these sports. This event was part of Devon SportsLab’s Community Events program, which is a partnership between Devon Energy, Engage Learning, the University of Oklahoma, OSU, and Tulsa University. The goal of Devon SportsLab is to show students that STEM concepts are present in everyday activities like sports.

Tangi Smith, community relations supervisor at Devon Energy, emphasized the importance of demonstrating to students that STEM goes beyond the classroom. She hopes that their experience with Devon SportsLab will inspire them to consider pursuing a STEM career in the future. By encouraging students to dream big and explore various opportunities, this collaborative effort aims to inspire young minds to reach for the stars.

Kingfisher Upper Elementary Principal Erin Michael expressed the students’ excitement about learning from OSU student-athletes. The interaction with the athletes was a special experience for the students, who were grateful to Devon for providing this opportunity at their school. The students eagerly participated in interactive drills led by the OSU athletes, focusing on passing, ball control, and dribbling techniques.

The event featured football players such as Rashod Owens, Obi Ezeigbo, Lyrik Rawls, and Justin Kirkland as well as soccer players such as Xcaret Pineda, Ellie Geoffroy, Caroline Dill, and Gracie Bindbeutel. While Devon SportsLab is typically held before college athletic events or on campuses for half-day clinics, this particular clinic in Kingfisher was part of a series of community events happening across the state.
