Celebrating Citizen Science Month: Recognizing NOAA’s Dedicated Volunteers

Get involved in science activities with NOAA

Citizen Science Month, which takes place in April, is an opportunity to recognize the dedicated volunteers who support NOAA science projects. With over 564,000 volunteers contributing about 1.3 million hours annually, their efforts are crucial in helping NOAA achieve its mission. Whether they are investigating heat impacts in urban areas or surveying marine debris, these volunteers play an essential role in scientific research.

If you’re interested in becoming a NOAA citizen scientist, there are various volunteer opportunities available both virtually and in-person. You can explore the different projects and find one that aligns with your interests and skills. By contributing your time and knowledge, you’ll be making a valuable contribution to scientific research.

In celebration of Citizen Science Month, NOAA will be hosting a Citizen Science Webinar series in collaboration with the NOAA Central Library. You can register for the upcoming webinar on “Getting Started in Citizen Science” presented by NOAA Citizen Science Program Support Specialist Rebecca Funk on April 18. Additionally, you can view recordings of past webinars on the NOAA Education YouTube playlist.

Throughout the month, stories shared by volunteers about their experiences and the impact of their participation on science and communities will be highlighted. Join us in celebrating Citizen Science Month by following along on social media at @NOAAEducation. Let’s recognize and thank these dedicated individuals for their contributions to scientific research!
